Chapitre 1

The Climate Crisis: Vocabulary and Causes

Global Warming and Greenhouse Gases

Le réchauffement climatique n'est pas un phénomène isolé, mais le résultat d'une accumulation de gaz dans l'atmosphère.

  • The greenhouse effect (l'effet de serre) : C'est le processus par lequel les radiations provenant de l'atmosphère d'une planète réchauffent la surface de cette planète.
  • Greenhouse gases (GHG) : Les gaz à effet de serre (CO2, methane, nitrous oxide).
  • Carbon footprint (l'empreinte carbone) : The amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere as a result of the activities of a particular individual, organization, or community.

Fossil fuels vs. Renewable energy Pour réduire notre empreinte, le monde doit passer des énergies fossiles aux énergies renouvelables.

Fossil Fuels (Énergies fossiles)Renewable Energy (Énergies renouvelables)
Coal (charbon)Solar power (énergie solaire)
Oil / Crude oil (pétrole)Wind power (énergie éolienne)
Natural gas (gaz naturel)Hydropower (hydroélectricité)
Non-renewable and pollutingClean and sustainable

L'utilisation massive de fossil fuels est la cause principale de l'augmentation du CO2 dans l'atmosphère.

Natural Disasters and Extreme Weather

Le dérèglement climatique entraîne une multiplication des phénomènes météorologiques extrêmes.

  • Floods (inondations) : Occur when an area of land is covered by water after heavy rain.
  • Droughts (sécheresses) : Long periods of time with little or no rain, leading to water shortages.
  • Wildfires (feux de forêt) : Large, destructive fires that spread quickly through woodland or brush.
  • Melting ice caps (la fonte des calottes glaciaires) : The process where glaciers and ice sheets at the poles turn into water due to heat.
  • Rising sea levels (la montée du niveau de la mer) : A direct consequence of melting ice and the thermal expansion of seawater.

Example: "Due to global warming, the ice caps are melting at an alarming rate, which causes rising sea levels and threatens coastal cities."

Human Impact on the Planet

L'activité humaine transforme radicalement les écosystèmes.

  1. Deforestation: The action of clearing a wide area of trees. It leads to habitat loss for many species, causing a decline in biodiversity.
  2. Overconsumption (surconsommation) : The action of consuming resources at a rate that is not sustainable.
  3. Industrial pollution : Contamination of the air, water, and soil by industrial waste.

Habitat loss is the primary reason why many species are currently facing extinction.

Chapitre 2

Grammar in Context: Expressing Future and Probability

Predicting the Future of the Earth

En anglais, le futur se construit différemment selon la nature de la prédiction.

  • Will : Utilisé pour des prédictions basées sur une opinion ou une certitude théorique.
    • Example: "Scientists believe that temperatures will rise by 2 degrees by 2050."
  • Be going to : Utilisé pour des prédictions basées sur des preuves présentes évidentes.
    • Example: "Look at those black clouds! It is going to rain." (Preuve visuelle).

Modal verbs of probability Quand vous n'êtes pas sûr de l'avenir, utilisez des modaux :

  • May / Might : Probabilité moyenne ou faible (peut-être).
    • Example: "If we don't change, we might lose the Great Barrier Reef."
  • Could : Possibilité théorique.
    • Example: "New technologies could save the planet."

Adverbs of certainty

  • Definitely (certainement) / Probably (probablement).
  • Word order: Ils se placent après "will" mais avant "won't".
    • Example: "We will definitely need more solar panels."
    • Example: "We probably won't stop using plastic tomorrow."

Conditional Sentences (Type 1)

Le "First Conditional" est utilisé pour parler de conséquences réelles et possibles dans le futur.

Structure : If + Present Simple, WILL + Base Verb

  • Example: "If we recycle more, we will reduce pollution."
  • Note: On n'utilise jamais "will" dans la proposition introduite par "if".

Using 'Unless' "Unless" signifie "à moins que" ou "si... ne... pas".

  • Example: "Unless we act now, the situation will get worse."
  • (Equivalent à : "If we don't act now, the situation will get worse.")

Expressing Hopes and Fears

Pour exprimer vos sentiments face à l'avenir :

  • I hope that... + présent ou futur : "I hope that we can save the oceans."
  • I am afraid that... / I fear that... : "I am afraid that it is too late for some species."
  • Expect / Anticipate : "Experts expect global temperatures to rise."

The use of 'Wish' Pour exprimer un regret sur une situation présente (ce que l'on voudrait changer maintenant) : Structure : Wish + Past Simple

  • Example: "I wish people cared more about the environment." (Je voudrais que les gens s'en soucient plus - mais ce n'est pas le cas).

Chapitre 3

Sustainable Living and Individual Action

The 3 Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

C'est la règle d'or de la gestion des déchets (waste management).

  1. Reduce : Consommer moins pour produire moins de déchets.
  2. Reuse : Utiliser un objet plusieurs fois au lieu de le jeter.
  3. Recycle : Transformer les déchets en nouveaux produits.
  • Single-use plastics : Les plastiques à usage unique (straws, bottles, bags).
  • Alternatives : Bamboo toothbrushes, tote bags, glass jars.
  • Upcycling : Créer quelque chose de plus grande valeur à partir de déchets (surcyclage).
  • Circular economy : Un système économique visant à éliminer le gaspillage.

Eco-friendly Habits

Comment devenir un "eco-warrior" au quotidien ?

  • Commuting (trajets quotidiens) :
    • Favoriser le public transport (bus, train).
    • Practice carpooling (covoiturage) to reduce the number of vehicles on the road.
  • Energy saving :
    • Turn off the lights when leaving a room.
    • Lower the thermostat (le chauffage).
  • Ethical shopping :
    • Buy local food to reduce "food miles".
    • Avoid products with excessive packaging.

Giving Advice and Suggestions

Pour conseiller quelqu'un sur ses habitudes écologiques :

  • Should / Ought to : "You should carry a reusable water bottle."
  • Imperative : "Don't waste water!"
  • Suggestions :
    • "Why don't we start a compost bin?"
    • "How about cycling to school instead of taking the car?" (Note: 'How about' est suivi de -ING).

Chapitre 4

Global Movements and Activism

Youth for Climate

Ces dernières années, la jeunesse s'est mobilisée massivement.

  • School strikes : Les grèves scolaires pour le climat.
  • Protests / Marches : Les manifestations.
  • Greta Thunberg : The Swedish activist who started the "Fridays for Future" movement.
  • Social media : An essential tool to raise awareness and organize global events.

Awareness (la prise de conscience) est la première étape vers le changement politique.

International Agreements

Les gouvernements se réunissent lors de sommets mondiaux pour prendre des décisions.

  • The Paris Agreement (L'Accord de Paris) : A legally binding international treaty on climate change, adopted in 2015.
  • COP (Conference of the Parties) : Annual summits where world leaders discuss climate goals.
  • NGOs (Non-Governmental Organizations) : Greenpeace, WWF, etc., which pressure governments to act.

Debating Environmental Policies

Quelles solutions politiques adopter ?

  • Green taxes : Taxes on carbon emissions to discourage pollution.
    • Pros: Encourages companies to be cleaner.
    • Cons: Can increase prices for consumers.
  • Urban planning : Designing cities with more green spaces and bike lanes.
  • Corporate social responsibility (CSR) : The idea that companies should be responsible for their impact on society and the environment.

Chapitre 5

Technological Innovations for the Future

Green Technology

L'innovation se concentre sur la décarbonation de l'énergie et des transports.

  • Solar / Wind / Hydroelectric power : Clean sources of energy that do not emit CO2.
  • Electric vehicles (EVs) : Cars that run on electricity instead of gasoline.
  • Smart cities : Cities that use digital technology to become more energy efficient (better lighting, optimized traffic, waste sensors).

The Role of Science

  • Carbon capture technology : Capturing CO2 from the air and storing it underground.
  • Biodegradable materials : Materials that can decompose naturally without harming the environment.
  • Genetic engineering : Developing resilient crops that can survive droughts or floods to ensure food security.

Critical Thinking: Greenwashing

Il est important de garder un esprit critique face aux promesses des entreprises.

  • Greenwashing (écoblanchiment) : When a company spends more time and money claiming to be "green" through advertising than actually implementing environmentally friendly practices.
  • Misleading labels : Using words like "natural" or "eco-friendly" without any official certification.
  • Analyzing claims : We must check if a company's actions match its words.

Example: A fashion brand claiming to be "sustainable" while still using sweatshops and polluting chemicals is practicing greenwashing.
